What To Wear When You Work From Home

I don’t know about you other work from home moms, but I have mixed feelings about the situation. Sometimes life’s a breeze. There are days I feel like I really get the best of both worlds. I’m able to work as it suits my needs, control my income, and put my family first while maintaining something purposeful for myself. I knew from the moment my first son was born that I wanted to stay home. And I’m so thankful.

However, there are also days it’s really tough. There are plenty of days I find it hard to strike a balance. It’s a whole different ball game being your own boss; you have to find a rhythm and self-discipline is a MUST. And even though it can seem like a small piece of the puzzle, part of the package is figuring out what to wear to keep you in a productive mindset. Working from home means there’s no company dress code for you to fall back on. So, what should you wear to keep you on your work from home game? Here’s a few suggestions:

Workout Wear

If you know that you don’t want to overcomplicate things in the morning, or make too many decisions throughout the day, then keep your workwear simple. The best option? Workout wear.

This has proved to be my #1 go-to option on days I don’t feel like I can swing jeans. Not only am I covered for my workout, but also getting down in the floor to play with the babies. And all without the expense of feeling sloppy.

Now, we’re not talking stained sweat, but stuff that you’d still happily dash off to the store in. All black yoga pants and a tee would be great. You’re comfortable, but feel like you’re dressed, so it can be an easy option to go for.

Comfortable Jeans

Even though workout wear is great for many days, jeans are what I turn to when I really want to put my productive face on. They aren’t too restricting, but just enough to make me feel like I mean business. (It’s hard to get too comfortable with jeans on.) If you can get a pair of jeans with a lot of stretch in them, then you’re on to a winner and the perfect work from home uniform.

Soft Fabrics

Another thing to load up on for your work from home wardrobe, is clothing in incredible fabrics. You can think about soft cotton t-shirts or take a hint from From Farm to Foot and invest in a structured yet ultra comfortable pair of slippers. (I have found that one of the greatest things I’ve done for my productivity is to wear shoes of some sort around the house.) Even cashmere sweats and hooded tops are perfect. Sweatshirts with a sense of style are some of my personal favorites. If you’re going to be comfortable, then you need to make sure that you have the best materials for the job!

Smart Casual Style

Then, you might want to create a smart casual uniform for yourself. One of my favorite things to do is create capsule wardrobes. Creating a smart casual selection of outfits that you can mix and match is one of the best ways to make getting dressed easy. You’re put together without having to give your look too much thought, but you will feel professional when you’re dressed.

PJs!

And last but not least, there’s always the option to wear your pajamas! This won’t be something that works for everyone, (*ahem* me–I am so lazy once the jammies go on…) as it can often be hard to stay focused when you’re wearing pjs. Sometimes, you will feel far too casual and it makes you feel less productive. But it definitely doesn’t hurt to do it every now and again. (Especially if you are used to burning the midnight oil!) So if you know that you will thrive in pajamas, or you just need a day of taking it easy – go for it!
