Thanksgiving 2016

Thanksgiving has come and gone and I feel like we’ve barely had a minute to breathe before the Christmas trees start going up and lights appear everywhere. I decided to take a week long break from social media to enjoy family gatherings and it was refreshing. It’s so easy to forget how real the world is and how much there is to be thankful for when you live your life on the internet–family, traditions, feasts, and togetherness.

Hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving and a long and restful weekend. Here’s an hour by hour look at my family’s Thanksgiving day!

9:00 AM

We got a late start–normally up at 7:30, Squirt was just rolling out of bed!dsc_0522

10:00 AM

Okay, we still were frumping around in our pajamas–getting a little exercise at the same time. But we’ve got some food simmer in the crock pots. You can check out the crock pot mac n’ cheese and crock pot stuffing recipes we used on my last post, 5 Thanksgiving Slow Cooker Recipes to Free Up Time & Space. Trust me, it was the BIGGEST stress reducer. dsc_0523

11:00 AM

Getting the table set for our Thanksgiving feast! Mom knows how to make a cozy spread. Meanwhile, she’s whipping up some more tasty dishes in the kitchen. dsc_0526

12:00 PM

Dad’s getting the turkey in the skillets at the latest possible time so we can enjoy it still warm and crisp. There’s always pounds leftover, but nobody seems to mind. 😉dsc_0530Meanwhile, I’m checking out some of my sister’s new odds and ends she’s collected since I was last home for a visit. She’s forever gathering things to decorate her house after she’s married next summer.

I’m also adjusting before I get back in the kitchen to prep the asparagus for roasting at the last minute. I like to keep it simple: toss the spears in olive oil, salt and pepper, and roast them at 425 for 10 minutes with tons of parmesan sprinkled on top.dsc_0534dsc_0543dsc_0535

12:30 PM

Mom’s got the salad ready and Little Man crashes for a nap on Great Grandma’s lap. I made the mistake of trying to move him, but hey, GG’s gotta eat, too! dsc_0544dsc_0546

1:00 PM

Everything’s coming together as planned and we’re about ready to eat! A few dishes among the many sweet potato casserole, crock pot mac n’ cheese, and fried turkey. dsc_0547dsc_0548dsc_0549And here we have the kiddo struggle-napping. Like I said, shouldn’t have moved him!dsc_0551

1:30 PM

The food is blessed and we’re all dipping our plates while Mom tries to get Jonas to eat his Thanksgiving meal: peas, sweet potato, and bananas. He’s really not having it. dsc_0553dsc_0555

2:00 PM

Eyein’ that pumpkin pie, but too stuffed to slice it. Maybe later…dsc_0557

  1. Wow! It really was a jammed packed day, wasn’t it, but we so enjoyed every bit of it. Thanks for recording a Thanksgiving day in the life of our family.
