Every day, at some point, I do my best to break from my motherly duties and sit down to read a few verses from the Bible. I used to have time for a chapter or more a day, but these days I tend to read about 5 verses at a time, doing my best to keep up with the continuing narrative and internalizing its significance. Right now I’m slowly chipping away from Genesis to Revelation as an alternative to reading a devotion or a topical study.
Some time ago I discovered what has become one of my new favorite Bible study tools–The Journible. The one I’ve linked here is one of the more popular titles covering some of the New Testament letters. Although I had purchased one some time ago, I’ve just now begun using it because it covers the book of Deuteronomy.
What is a journible?
Also known as The 17:18 Series, The Journibles Series is derived from Deuteronomy 17:18 where the king is commanded by God to not only acquire a copy of the law but to write his own copy. It is well known that writing increases the retention of the material being studied and, armed with this knowledge, the creators of the journibles were inspired to bind together a series of notebooks which allows you to write your own copy of the scripture on the right side while providing ample room for study notes on the left!
Journibles are available in all of the most popularly studied books of the Bible. I picked up my copy once I reached the book of Deuteronomy in my studies and have been using it to deepen my retention and understanding as I’m going verse-by-verse. I enjoy sitting down for a few minutes every day to copy about 5 verses by hand and adding bits and pieces of commentary on the lefthand side.
Journibles are also a great gift! I once had a lovely conversation with one of my college professors about her study of the scriptures and how she has always loved to copy them by hand. Being one of the most helpful people in my pursuit of a degree, I wanted to convey my appreciation to her and immediately thought of The Journible Series as the perfect gift for the occasion. The Journible is a wonderful alternative gift to the overdone devotionals or coffee table anthologies. It’s an especially lovely tool for those who love to write.
