Hello readers! I’ve been getting my house in shape very slowly for the fall season; breaking out my fall decorations and working on my decluttering goals for this year. Now if I could just convince my husband to help me set up for a yard sale…
One thing I’ve noticed that needs some adjusting is my kitchen storage. And my kitchen isn’t even particularly small! As moms, sometimes it feels like we spend 75% of our days in the kitchen. Someone is ALWAYS needing something to eat. Especially if your kitchen is small, it can start to look a little cluttered. It may be time for you to focus on some simple (yet nifty) storage solutions. Cause, let’s be real moms, it stays a mess. We need all the help we can get.
Use Your Walls
You don’t just have to use your kitchen drawers and cupboards to store all of your pots, pans, cutlery, and crockery. Look to your walls instead. We have all seen those magnetic knife racks that can be attached to your wall, but what about going one step further? Lattice meshes that are sturdy and robust can be attached to your walls. They are strong, give your kitchen an industrial or farmhouse look and can be used to store all sorts of hookable gadgets. Whisks, measuring cups and grinders can adorn your steel grid wall, freeing up some much needed space in your cupboards. You will also have those implements that are most used much closer to hand. Just make sure to hang it high enough that curious hands can’t reach!
Shelves
It seems obvious to throw up a few shelves to add square footage to your storage areas, but you may not have considered the more unique places that you can put them. Over your windows are the perfect spaces to hide away those larger items of clutter that may not get used so often. Whip up a couple of wall brackets and a sturdy shelf, and you could neatly put on display your cool bread machine and table top mixer. Alternatively, you could make better use of your back splash and add a perspex shelf in the center. This could be used for spices, small containers or tiny gizmos. If you are struggling to work out where best to utilize some nifty storage solutions, get in touch with a kitchen remodeling company like A+ Construction Pro, who can advise you on the best configuration for your culinary needs.
Window Garden
Lastly, if you are into keeping fresh herbs (something I do with mediocre pizazz), consider a window garden. So far all I’ve cultivated on my window sill is this little basil plant. It’s cheaper AND pretty! Even a small kitchen has to potential for housing plants. Your window sill could be the perfect space for potting up your dill, basil, tarragon and coriander herbs. You may even want to utilize a hanging basket. You can experiment and see what works for you. Being near the window means that your herbs will get adequate sunlight and all you need to do is keep them watered.
