5 Decorating Tips For The Mom On A Budget

Hey there Moms-on-a-budget! You may think that making any changes to your home interior is out of your price range. I feel like I have this conversation with myself every season as I’m putting out my meager collection of fall or Christmas decor. How can I justify buying new house fluff when I have bills to pay and food to put on the table? But, ah! When I became a mom, I discovered my hidden DIY skills. If you are ready to roll your sleeves up, you might find these tips helpful for giving your space new life when your budget is to tight for a trip to Target. (Because really, we all just want to go buy everything in Joanna Gaines line.)

Add Some Fairy Lights

You can get fairy lights without breaking the bank at Walmart, and they will make any room take on a new, warmer feel. Matter of fact, I’ve got some lights wrapped around a blanket ladder in my bedroom and they give every winter night a warm glow. They’re also very versatile; you can put them across shelves, in clear vases and jars, or between other light fittings on the walls. Your kids will love them and, like I said, they will look beautifully seasonal on dark winter nights.

Make Your Own Cushions

You can get pieces of fabric from a variety of stores, without having to spend too much. There are many tutorials out there on YouTube on how to turn this fabric into any sized cushion that you like, so replacing your old cases with some brand new and impressive ones won’t take you long at all. Again, if your Walmart has a decent fabric section, I could be a as easy as choosing, sewing, and stuffing to get some new pillows. (I didn’t realize pillows were so dang expensive til we bought a house?! It’s almost criminal?!) I digress! A few new patterned pillows on your couch can make the room seem like it’s Sotheby’s Realty material.

Give Your Furniture New Life

If you really want to go all out, get a paintbrush at the ready and turn your old furniture into some brand new pieces. I’m literally waiting for the right weekend to turn an old worn out chest we have in our living room into a small dresser for my 9 month old’s clothes. All you have to do is choose a color and decide what look you want to go with. (In our case, I’m considering turning a dingy brown into a rustic red.) You can turn a side table into a kid’s dresser like me, or maybe repaint a bookshelf and create a reading nook or small home library! People will really notice the difference, especially if you go for a light and modern color.

Rearrange

You may just be tired of seeing your furniture in the same place that it has always been in, and this one really will cost you nothing. Just move your furniture around a bit, and you could find a great arrangement that you never thought about before. Your house will feel brand new, but your wallet will be the exact same. We’ve done this several times with our living room.

Buy Some House Plants

Finally, if you are out of the toddler phase, consider house plants! They are really cheap! And you can buy specific types of plants that don’t require a lot of attention if you don’t have the time to attend to them. Or you could go ultra cheapskate like me and replant a pineapple top and grow one of them suckers.

What are some budget friendly tips you have used to give your home a fresh look? Happy homemaking!
